Hem and add elastic to the leg opening (Version A Joggers only)

Fold the hem by 5/8" (1.5 cm) and press. Then fold the hem again by 2 ¼" (~6 cm) and press again. Topstitch the hem in place to create a casing for the hem elastic, but leave about 2" to 3" (5 to 8 cm) open for inserting the elastic.  Repeat on the other leg opening.

Cut a length of 2" (5 cm) elastic as specified for the leg opening of your size on page 2 of the pattern instructions.

Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and feed the elastic through the casing, taking care to prevent it from twisting inside the casing. When it is fed through, pull out each end and overlap them. Secure the ends of the elastic together with a zigzag stitch to form a loop (again, making sure the elastic is not twisted within the casing).

Push the elastic fully into the casing and evenly distribute. Try on the pants to make sure the elastic feels comfortable around your ankles.

Once the elastic is in the casing, topstitch the hem closed. Then add additional rows of topstitching--the same as the waistband--to further secure the elastic in the casing. Stretch the elastic and hem to fully extend while you topstitch.

Hem the shorts (Version B Shorts only)

Fold the hem by 5/8" (1.5 cm) and press. Then fold the hem again by 1" (2.5 cm) and press again. Topstitch the hem in place along the entire perimeter of the leg opening.

Add closures to fly

Hand sew two bars from a hook and bar closure set to the exterior side of  the right front waistband (when worn), stacked one on top of the other vertically.

Hand sew the hooks from the same set to the wrong side of the left front waistband (when worn), so that when the fly is zipped the hooks align with the corresponding bars.
